Sleeping Lady Harvest Dinner

I first discovered Sleeping Lady Resort when Jack and I joined David for his general surgery retreat during his first year of post-graduate training. It is a blissful place tucked into the Cascade Mountains along the Icicle River, just outside of Leavenworth, just a few hours from Seattle. The serenity is amazing, but the thing that stood out the most during our visit was the amazing food being served at the resort. Many of the room packages include a buffet-style breakfast and dinner at the resort's Kingfisher Restaurant and, while I am not typically too excited for buffets, I was wowed by the amazing quality and attention placed on the food here.  On the resort property is a two acre organic garden where much of the produce and herbs used in the resort's restaurants are grown.  The farmers use both natural fertilizers, crop rotation, and environmentally beneficial insects like bees and ladybugs to maintain a healthy and sustainable garden.  And, it is quite clear from observing the daily work in the garden and talking with staff about it, that it is quite the pride of Sleeping Lady.  The culinary team visits the garden daily to harvest fresh ingredients and to plan for the resort's daily changing menus.

When I was graciously presented with the opportunity to attend the late summer Harvest Dinner in Sleeping Lady's organic garden, I, understandably, jumped at the chance!  Not only do I respect the work of Sleeping Lady's culinary team, I've always wanted to dine at an outdoor farm dinner like the beautiful ones hosted by Outstanding in the Field. The Harvest Dinner seemed like a perfect way to have the experience of dining in celebration of the chef, the farmer, and the land, yet without the tremendous cost.

Spinach and Potato Fritatta (and Friday Links)

It shouldn't be a surprise to any of you that vegetarian dinners are a given in my home. I have many recipes posted here that feature beans as the primary protein or pastawith vegetables as the main course.  I like meat.  We eat meat.  But, we don't eat meat very often and, in fact, most of our dinners at home each week are vegetarian. I also love a savory breakfast dish for dinner. This frittata just sort of happened and I'm glad it did because it was very good.  It's also easy to prepare, which is so helpful with all of the after-school fall activities that are starting to fill the calendars.  Plus, the leftovers are wonderful the next day for lunch.

Kindergarten

Jack is scheduled to begin Kindergarten this week (he was actually supposed to begin today, but the teachers in Seattle have voted to strike regarding some wage disagreements, so the exact start date is unknown). But. KINDERGARTEN.  REAL school.  Yesterday, we had orientation.  We met his teacher and his classmates and explored in his classroom.

End of Summer Pasta

It's funny. While I think that I feel ready for fall, my actions show that I'm still holding onto summer.  At Trader Joe's this week, the kind cashier pointed out that a large component of my groceries were ice cream, coffee, and wine with a good smattering of summer vegetables to round things out and to make life balanced. I laughed when he noticed and then examined my items more closely noting that all the wines I chose were whites and roses, that I had 3 pounds of tomatoes, 4 pounds of peaches, and not yet one item purchased for the lunch box lunches that will commence after Labor Day.

Giving Up My Day Job

I'm a lucky, lucky lady. My days are filled with so much wonder that I often find myself in awe of these two boys of mine. I've been a Mama for nearly 6 years (??!!!???) now, yet I'm still learning the ropes of parenting every day. Recently, we made the decision that I will quit my day job, for at least a few years, to devote more of myself to these two rad dudes of ours and to my sweet husband and home. I'm pretty sure my learning curve won't grow exponentially as I navigate this new role, but I sure do feel grateful for this opportunity. I'm over the moon to be around for all of Rigby's "firsts" and to be able to walk Jack back and forth to school each day while he is still allowing me to hold his hand and to kiss him hello and goodbye.

Six Weeks Old

A friend told me that a baby's fussiest period is between weeks 4-8. I am hoping this is true as we are smack in the middle of that window of time, and I can assure you that nothing is wrong with Rigby's lungs. He exercises them most evenings, falling into the stereotypical baby bewitching hour(s) routine which consists of loud wails and Mama bouncing him up and down in the baby Bjorn or baby wrap while trying to eat dinner and then passing him off to Pops or Nonna while we do Jack's bedtime story.

Rigby's First Two Weeks of Life

Last Tuesday marked my original due date and Rigby's 16th day of life. Despite having to endure labor contractions, we feel so lucky that Rigby chose his own birthday and, particularly, that he chose to arrive early. My last weeks of pregnancy were pretty uncomfortable.  As expected, the days are slipping past so quickly; I wanted to capture some memories, along with many photos, of course, of Rigby's first few weeks of life.
